El sismo, que se produjo a las 01:44 (hora local), afectó al distrito de Tonghai de la ciudad de Yuxi. El epicentro del movimiento telúrico se localizó a una profundidad de siete kilómetros y en un punto situado a 24,19 grados latitud norte y 102,71 grados longitud este, según el Centro de Redes Sismológicas de China.
